Sphinx Building

How many sphinxes is it
that I’ve built now?
Thousands
some whose names I will remember forever and
others who I had crafted
from twigs or from certain slants of light
that were dispersed
Carelessly
which is the way my moods work
But for you
I am building one to rival
a great desert god
this time there won’t be any riddles
This time
  it will keep its mouth
  shut

We Had A Rodent Problem And You Made Me Lay Out Glue Traps

Mice in a stained-glass window and
Mice in the coffee pot, mice in the minute rice
Mice gnawing on dollar store candles.

You handed me the glue traps and a leak in the ceiling.
You would brag about it to your friends who all wore
the same beard and the crust punk shirts- that I was like a cat, I killed so many-

Mice in a glue trap, eye towards god
and I came as a patron saint with
The plastic tub of olive oil and

Mice in some olive oil, mice back in the penne pasta
Mice back to gnawing on your leather boots
Mice in the walls hearing me ask them to return the favor
