dEATH BY SKYGAZINGJESSI CARRUBBATypically, my artwork is about progress: it centers on the idea of moving forward despite trauma or other types of hindrances. It's about acknowledging what holds us back and still pushing forward towards our goals. However, these pieces differ in that they are more about staying still than moving. For those few precious seconds, our world is a wide expanse of color. There is no horizon line to orient ourselves. There are no expectations of a journey or purpose. We are just there, our vision overwhelmed by the natural state of our world. To some, this seems like an ideal form of existence. To my restless mind, it's terrifying. I think this is why I find this series just as exciting as my previous work. It's permission to myself to sit still, and a reminder that "progress" is sometimes actually just "running away."  Jessi Carrubba is an Austin-based artist and designer whose work often represents ways to process and move forward after past traumas, focusing, in particular, on her experience as a cancer-survivor. Through her work, she hopes to provide encouragement for inquisitiveness and a space for genuine self-reflection.
